From idea to impact:
Hosting a sustainable fashion event in just four weeks

Overview

Robin Howard, founder of Revampt, runs an online resale business and works as a personal stylist in Grandview, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. With a vision to bring her community together around sustainability and style, Robin set out to host a themed clothing exchange focused on “sustainable glamour.” Having organized swaps in the past, she was looking for a more efficient and professional approach—one that would streamline logistics and offer an effective but manageable promotion strategy. That’s when she turned to the Circular Thrift self-paced online course.

The Challenge

Robin knew that pulling off a community event could be time-consuming and often overwhelming. While she had some experience hosting swaps, she lacked a ready-made network for promotion beyond her neighborhood. She wanted the event to be impactful—both environmentally and socially—and to at least cover her costs, if not generate a small profit. One of her goals was to measure the environmental benefits of the event, but she wasn’t sure how to approach that in a meaningful, credible way.

The Solution

With Circular Thrift’s digital toolkit, Robin quickly got up to speed on the “why” behind clothing exchanges—learning how to confidently talk about circular fashion and its environmental value. She used the event planning template to map out the process step-by-step, with tasks broken down by week. Once she selected her venue, all she had to do was plug in her event date and follow the roadmap.

For promotion, Robin tapped into the social media content library included in the subscription. She selected a visual style that fit the aesthetic of her event, customized the captions with her persona and event details, and didn’t waste time worrying about image sizing or formatting—everything was ready to go.

The Results

Robin’s event drew more than 30 attendees, and nearly 300 garments were brought to the exchange. Of those, 100 found new homes that day. She donated the remaining items—high-quality and resale-worthy—to a national charity. Robin achieved her goal of encouraging community members to swap instead of shop.
Using the impact calculator and summary spreadsheet from the course, she was able to quantify the results:

  • 3044 lbs of carbon emissions avoided
  • 2798 kWh of energy saved
  • 8405 gallons of water preserved

All by facilitating the reuse of clothing instead of new purchases.
